Undergraduate student-consultants will develop a tailored strategy addressing challenges or opportunities related to commercializing products, developing new markets, market research, marketing communications, business model validation and more.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Deliverables include a written report (up to 15) pages and a PowerPoint presentation. Student group present their findings at the end of term and submit a report. Many groups meet with the company for follow-up.

Project Examples

Starting this September, a group of four senior business students will spend approximately 400 hours cumulatively over the course of the semester collaborating with your organization to address your unique business needs.

Projects areas of focus can include, but are not limited to:

  • Surveying potential customers and talking with focus groups
  • Identifying and evaluating potential customer profiles and markets
  • Developing value propositions and use cases for specific market segments
  • Conducting value chain analysis and auditing partner profiles
  • Developing a competitive matrix
  • Validating business models
  • Developing marketing materials and collateral for investor presentations
  • Etc.

The student groups present their findings in a ‘consulting plan’ to their class at the end of term. Proprietary company information remains confidential at all times. BUS 338 is a key business course at SFU and over 50 companies have participated to-date.

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available for a 1-hour interview (virtual, phone, or in person) to kick off the project and share background information with the student(s).

Be responsive to periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions or provide additional information.
